I wanted to send my brother a care package, but I'm sick so that will have to wait until later this month. My brother just started college as a freshman at a small, prestigious, liberal Christian college and I'm only a mite jealous about some of his choices for classes -- he gets to take Judo, Intro to Theatre, and Chamber Music Orchestra. If only...
From what I remember, being a freshman was scary (new people! New experiences! More homework! Living on my own!) and fun (same reasons, really, except for the more homework part). I got to hear "new" music (most notably all of Avril Lavigne's songs from her first two albums, not just Sk8tr Boi, and "Beverly Hills" by Weezer). But no one ever told me:
1. Remember to have FUN. Don't stress over the little things.
2. That being said, get organized. You'll thank yourself later.
3. Try new things -- even if you don't make it, you tried and there's always next year.
4. Really don't stress about your grades. It'll make your health poor later.
5. Eat well and exercise. Your body will thank you later.
So I had to learn most of those things the hard way. I DID try out for things the first year, but after getting nothing I just went for the things I knew I could get, like being part of the crew for a play instead of trying out for a role.
It's hard not to want to try to straighten out your siblings' lives before they even attempt the mistakes you've made. So all the advice I gave my brother in my letter was "Remember to have fun."
He's a studious kid who sometimes takes things a little too seriously, so hopefully he'll be able to relax and maybe my letter will make him laugh.
Here's the letter (written on notebook paper -- I didn't think a boy would appreciate flowery stationary):
And then I even scribbled him a portrait of half the Weasley family (Ginny, Percy, Fred, Ron, & George):
And then I put it all together:
Then I put it in the mail slot.
Enjoy your letter, little brother!
