I Dance to the Tune of a Different Drummer

I have decided that I have a Spanish [of course] way of thinking when it comes to jobs. Spaniards, or at least all the ones I've met or read about [which is quite a few] don't really care about finding a job and building a career. While getting a job is a good thing, it's only to pay the bills. What really counts is spending time with family and friends - VACATION TIME. Spaniards work as little as possible and whenever they can, they go home and celebrate while the shops are closed.

It may look like they're lazy, but for the most part, Spaniards aren't really - they just have different priorities.

I have never wanted to have a career. I was not ever interested in finding a job I could "climb" with and get to the "top," whatever that is. It just doesn't interest me.

I'd rather spend time reading books, making things, playing music, or walking the dog. I just want a part-time job that will pay the bills so I can LIVE instead of work myself to death.

I used to be embarrassed and uncomfortable with the way I felt, thinking that I was alone in this thought process and that I would have to get a job with "career" potential.

Well, not anymore. Someday, if I have a choice of career, I might choose to be a writer or poet or artist or jewelry designer or dollhouse builder. But Corporate America holds no interest for me.

I like free time way too much.

  1. I feel the same way. If I ever end up making more than 20k a year I'll feel fabulously comfortable.

The American Dream isn't in the bible...

  2. yeah, I just need enough to get by and have a little extra cash for my hobbies. :P

The American Dream just degenerated into materialism...it was a happy thought for immigrants who wanted to make something of themselves, but their descendants turned it into something ugly and now it's just a depressing view of humankind.

That's not dreary enough, is it?! LOL.

I'm glad SOMEBODY feels the same way I do. :)
